CHOUCHOU — by Victoria Tonkin
STEP INSIDE AND LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND.
Chouchou (pronounced shoo-shoo): French for ‘darling’.
Chouchou is a deeply considered, design-led stay created for escapism — a world of its own where Parisian café culture, layered interiors and indulgent detail set the pace.
Having spent years reimagining property and hosting travellers from around the world, I’ve come to understand that true luxury isn’t about excess — it’s about atmosphere. It’s about how a space makes you feel. Chouchou isn’t styled simply to impress, but to immerse yourself as a guest, your brand or your big idea.
Morning coffee at the café table. Evenings by the fireplace. Long baths. Soft, ever-changing light by both day and by night. Beautiful objects collected with intention from both Australia and France. A quiet sense that you’ve somehow slipped away to Paris without the jet lag.
I so look forward to welcoming you into this magical little world.

A truly fabulous stay at Chouchou!
My girlfriends and I had the most wonderful & memorable time catching up in this gorgeous Parisian-inspired escape ⚜️. The location couldn’t be better — an easy stroll to the Botanic Gardens, great restaurants, and everything we needed for a relaxed weekend together.
From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by the thoughtful touches. The generous breakfast provisions and the complimentary bubbles and cake/sweets were such a delightful surprise. Every detail in the home has been curated with care: high‑quality décor, chic très bien design features, and a beautifully cohesive aesthetic that made the whole space feel luxurious yet welcoming.
Chouchou is one of those rare stays that feels even better than the photos — elegant, comfortable, and full of charm. We loved every minute and highly recommend this beautiful property.

Wow, wow, wow!!! What a beautiful house, and Victoria goes the extra mile to make it wonderful. On arrival the fire was on, essential oils diffusing music playing and we were left cake, biscuits, eggs, fresh orange juice, milk & plant milk, the best butter, fresh bread, avocado and lemons, amazing. The house is curated beautifully and I truly felt like I was in Paris. All of the linen, towels & soaps were of the highest quality. The kitchen appliances are all top end including an espresso coffee machine and all were wonderfully to use. The apartment was so beautiful I was reluctant to leave and explore the city. I would definitely recommend staying at this wonderful property.

Victoria - all I can say is wow and thank you. We had the most beautiful stay and experience at Chouchou - totally transported to our little slice of Paris for our stay in Albury.
The property is absolutely incredible - so thoughtful in every little detail from the furnishings right down to the French themed candy, fresh baked goods and blissful hospitality. Victoria was so responsive, even coming to the rescue to replace a coffee machine within one hour of contacting.
We absolutely loved our stay and will definitely be back, and recommending to all our friends.
Do yourself a favour and treat yourself to a slice of paradise in Albury

The Parisian stay in Albury exceeded our expectations, the little extras that were complimentary were really appreciated and added to our stay and making us feel welcome. The layout of the house is really impressive, very spacious and all rooms are appointed with distinctly French flair. We would definitely stay again.

This was by far the most amazing incredible Airbnb experience I have ever had! Truly an exceptional property. I felt like I was literally in France!
As soon as I walked in, I felt this warm and inviting feeling. Victoria had the fireplace on, soft lighting, I was greeted with a lovely welcome note, a fresh baked cake and sweets and to top it off a fresh loaf of sourdough bread on the kitchen bench! The fridge was stocked with fresh eggs, milk, orange juice and a mineral water. The attention to detail with the furnishings was next level. The master bedroom and the ensuite just blew my mind! Absolutely stunning. 10/10 magical place to stay!
Well done Victoria for creating a masterpiece property.

Fabulous! Fantastic! French!
Simply stunning, what a find in Albury.
The host was incredibly welcoming with fresh bread, cake, milk, eggs, juice and the best avocado’s I’ve ever tasted. Such a nice touch and rarely received at other (even high class) AirBnB’s!
Thank you — we loved our stay, and the location was even better than expected, with just a 5 minute walk to the main part of town!

VISITING ALBURY
If you haven’t been to Albury before, Chouchou is a pretty wonderful place to begin. Sitting proudly on the border of New South Wales and Victoria, just three hours north of Melbourne and five south of Sydney, Albury has quietly become one of regional Australia’s most underrated destinations.
There’s an ease to life here people seem to notice almost immediately. Long lunches that become dinners, old pubs glowing at dusk, wine bars tucked into historic buildings and tree lined streets that somehow make the whole city feel slower than it is.
Chouchou (opened in February 2026) is fast becoming a favourite stopover for travellers moving between Melbourne and Sydney. Perhaps because it comfortably sleeps four, but more likely because there’s simply nothing else quite like it.
MAMA ART GALLERY
If you enjoy art and design, Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) is genuinely impressive for a regional city and often surprises first-time visitors. The building itself is beautiful, and the exhibitions rotate regularly.
RIVERSIDE WALKS
For something quieter, the riverside walking tracks around the Albury - Murray River Precinct and the are beautiful at sunset, particularly with a takeaway coffee or wine in hand. The sculpture walk gently weaves Indigenous storytelling through the landscape and feels incredibly peaceful. Enjoy breakfast on the deck at The River Deck Cafe.
BROWNS LAGOON
Particularly special given the Brown family connection to Mister Browns and Little Olive. A quiet little sanctuary filled with birdlife and if you look closely enough, little turtles that pop their head out to say hello.
MONUMENT HILL
Driving up to Monument Hill at dusk with takeaway fish and chips or a bottle of wine to watch the city lights come on.
RUTHERGLEN WINE REGION
A slow drive out toward Rutherglen for cellar doors, long lunches and countryside that shifts beautifully through the seasons. (20 minute drive towards Melbourne).
BEECHWORTH REGION
If you have the time, a slow afternoon drive to Beechworth is always worthwhile. Around 40 minutes from Albury, the historic town is known for its gold rush architecture, beautiful wineries, old pubs and one of the prettiest main streets in regional Victoria. Popular tourist spots are the Old Beechworth Gaol, and the Asylum Ghost Tours at Mayday Hills.
THINGS TO DO
Albury’s food scene is quietly excellent. It’s one of those towns where people arrive expecting “regional pub food” and leave wondering why nobody talks about it more.
YARDBIRD RESTAURANT
For dinner, Yardbird Restaurant remains one of my personal favourites. Moody, intimate and consistently beautiful food without feeling overly formal. It feels very Albury in the best possible way.
NORMA WINE + PASTA
For dinner, I personally love Norma for wine and pasta, particularly if you’re chasing something intimate, warm and softly buzzing in the background. Old cottage feel with toasty fires and a fabulous wine list. Leave with full bellies.
AIDA MEDITERRANEAN
Aida Mediterranean Cuisine is another favourite — Mediterranean charcoal grill, beautiful food, flowing wine and excellent people watching if you can secure a table out on the verandah on a warm night.
BARS
For drinks, I love Temperance and General and Shenanigans Whiskey Bar — both feel warm, atmospheric and perfect for settling into for far longer than intended. If you want something a little more modern, Dux is also lovely and top of it’s class.
PLACES TO EAT
Albury has many cafe’s and Google will do a lot of the heavy lifting for you, all are wonderful. However I will recommend a couple to get you started.
MR BENEDICT CAFE
Closest to you, Mr. Benedicts has been a local favourite for as long as I can remember. A menu that has something for everyone, and a magnificent courtyard at the rear if you’d like to dine alfresco.
AS THICK AS THIEVES
Another very popular spot, often full with patrons spilling out on to Dean Street. With another menu that will not disappoint anyone.
