MISTER BROWNS //
An 1850’s PIONEERS
COTTAGE IN ALBURY.
What to Expect
A MOODY ESCAPE STEEPED IN ALBURY HISTORY,
MISTER BROWNS WAS ONCE THE ORIGINAL RESIDENCE OF ROBERT AND ELIZABETH BROWN, WITH WORN TIMBER THRESHOLDS, SMOKY FIRES AND WHISPERING NORFOLK PINES THAT STILL CARRY THE FEELING OF ANOTHER ERA.
WITH ITS RICH WOODEN INTERIORS, FLICKERING FIRELIGHT AND OLD WORLD CHARM, MISTER BROWNS FEELS LESS LIKE A STAY, AND MORE LIKE STEPPING QUIETLY BACK INTO THE 1850s, whilst holding a whiskey.
We stayed at Mr Browns for two nights on the drive from Sydney to Melbourne, and it was the perfect way to break up the trip. The hosts' recommendations were brilliant and made the whole stay feel beautifully curated.
Arriving to music playing, provisions laid out, and the history of the property unfolding around us felt like a truly immersive experience. The styling of the property is impeccable, straight from an editorial shoot. I spent so much time soaking in all the little details.
This was the kind of stay that lingers.

Thank you so much Victoria and team for such a wonderful stay. We really appreciated all the little details, the early check-in and the beautiful destination that you have created.
Location wise, we loved the quiet neighbourhood, the lagoon next door, and that it was nice stroll to the centre of town for a meal.
The cottage is full of 'feeling' and styled beautiful. So many cosy corners to hang out. Beautiful books for all ages. The kitchen was lovely to cook & dine in. There is plenty of space to move, and so many details to enjoy.
Beds were comfy, shower was excellent.
Albury is a middle meeting point now for our family, and we have happily found a home away from home.
Thanks again

What a divine home away from home!
The perfect place to enjoy, relax and rest our heads.
We truly adored our stay. From the personal touches and gorgeous design elements, comfort considerations and our golden retriever having an absolute ball we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful stay.
Thank you!

A 170 year old cottage beautifully restored and filled with carefully chosen furnishings. Delightful back garden and front verandah. Walk to the river and town. Quality linen, breakfast provisions a nice touch. Victoria has done a great job making this a cosy home with modern amenities.

The cottage exceeded expectations…from the fresh milk in the fridge to the stone baked bread, and the coffee machine. It was also very fresh and clean, in a lovely and a sympathetic renovation. Very pretty and pleasant to be in.

Mister Browns was an absolute delight. As soon as we walked in we felt like we were in Paris, not South Albury. Victoria has thought of everything to make the stay enjoyable, comfortable, and memorable. Beautiful linen, comfortable beds, a coffee machine. The house was cool in the middle of summer & the shaded garden out the back was the perfect place for sundowners. Victoria, Debra and Leanne were extremely accommodating and generous. Communication was friendly and prompt. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mister Browns and will stay again. Thank you for everything.

If you haven’t been to Albury before, Mister Browns is a pretty wonderful place to begin. Sitting proudly on the border of New South Wales and Victoria, just three hours north of Melbourne and five south of Sydney, Albury has quietly become one of regional Australia’s most underrated destinations.
There’s an ease to life here people seem to notice almost immediately. Long lunches that become dinners, old pubs glowing at dusk, wine bars tucked into historic buildings and tree lined streets that somehow make the whole city feel slower than it is.
Mister Browns has become a favourite stopover for travellers moving between Melbourne and Sydney. Perhaps because it comfortably sleeps four, but more likely because after a long day on the road, there’s something about arriving to a house that smells faintly of smoky firewood, old leather boots and stories soaked deep into the walls like spilled whiskey.
VISITING ALBURY
MAMA ART GALLERY
If you enjoy art and design, Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) is genuinely impressive for a regional city and often surprises first-time visitors. The building itself is beautiful, and the exhibitions rotate regularly.
RIVERSIDE WALKS
For something quieter, the riverside walking tracks around the Albury - Murray River Precinct and the are beautiful at sunset, particularly with a takeaway coffee or wine in hand. The sculpture walk gently weaves Indigenous storytelling through the landscape and feels incredibly peaceful. Enjoy breakfast on the deck at The River Deck Cafe.
BROWNS LAGOON
Particularly special given the Brown family connection to Mister Browns and Little Olive. A quiet little sanctuary filled with birdlife and if you look closely enough, little turtles that pop their head out to say hello.
MONUMENT HILL
Driving up to Monument Hill at dusk with takeaway fish and chips or a bottle of wine to watch the city lights come on.
RUTHERGLEN WINE REGION
A slow drive out toward Rutherglen for cellar doors, long lunches and countryside that shifts beautifully through the seasons. (20 minute drive towards Melbourne).
BEECHWORTH REGION
If you have the time, a slow afternoon drive to Beechworth is always worthwhile. Around 40 minutes from Albury, the historic town is known for its gold rush architecture, beautiful wineries, old pubs and one of the prettiest main streets in regional Victoria. Popular tourist spots are the Old Beechworth Gaol, and the Asylum Ghost Tours at Mayday Hills.
THINGS TO DO
Albury’s food scene is quietly excellent. It’s one of those towns where people arrive expecting “regional pub food” and leave wondering why nobody talks about it more.
YARDBIRD RESTAURANT
For dinner, Yardbird Restaurant remains one of my personal favourites. Moody, intimate and consistently beautiful food without feeling overly formal. It feels very Albury in the best possible way.
NORMA WINE + PASTA
For dinner, I personally love Norma for wine and pasta, particularly if you’re chasing something intimate, warm and softly buzzing in the background. Old cottage feel with toasty fires and a fabulous wine list. Leave with full bellies.
AIDA MEDITERRANEAN
Aida Mediterranean Cuisine is another favourite — Mediterranean charcoal grill, beautiful food, flowing wine and excellent people watching if you can secure a table out on the verandah on a warm night.
BARS
For drinks, I love Temperance and General and Shenanigans Whiskey Bar — both feel warm, atmospheric and perfect for settling into for far longer than intended. If you want something a little more modern, Dux is also lovely and top of it’s class.
PLACES TO EAT
Albury has many cafe’s and Google will do a lot of the heavy lifting for you, all are wonderful. However I will recommend you one, the closest, nearest and dearest to Mister Browns.
EBDEN & OLIVE
Run by long-time restauranteurs Steve & Jodie, Ebden & Olive has called this little corner of SOHO (South of Hovell Street) home for at least the last six years — I know this because that’s about how long we’ve been running too. This is not your average café. Think genuinely delicious gourmet café food, beautiful take-home meals, warm service and, in my opinion, the best coffee Albury has to offer.
CAFES
‘mr. brown steps down from his walnut brown horse, tying the reins beneath the old Norfolk pine for the evening. From his coat pocket, he pulls a tobacco pipe, the heavy leather soles of his boots crunching along the gravel toward the creaking front door.’
Their story became woven into the very beginnings of Albury. In 1856, Robert and Elizabeth Brown built this humble cottage beside Browns Lagoon, among river flats, towering gums and the muddy tracks of a frontier town still finding its feet.
Elizabeth, known affectionately by many as “Granny Brown”, was remembered as a caretaker of the community — said to have helped women through childbirth and cared for local families long before hospitals and modern comforts arrived in the district.
Beside the lagoon, the Browns built a life surrounded by swans, ducks, ibis, pelicans and little turtles peeking through the reeds. Nearly two centuries later, Little Olive remains a place to arrive, exhale, and feel quietly transported by the stories that still linger here.
